Dearly loved Friends,

The Plan upon which the Bahá’í world embarked nearly five years ago is in its closing stages; the final tally of its accomplishments grows still, but will soon be sealed. The collective effort it inspired has called for wholehearted reliance on those powers with which a benevolent Lord has endowed His loved ones. Gathered with you at this moment of reflection, we are conscious of a determination among the friends to bring the current Plan to a fitting conclusion, and of an eagerness to advance further along the path that experience has marked out.

What does a “devotional attitude” mean and what kind of implications does it have in ones practical day-to-day life? What aspects does “devotional attitude” touch upon? Devotional has a facet of meanings such as love and loyalty for a person or a cause, worship or observance and prayer. It seems that all these meanings somehow focus on a focal point, a centre of attention, which is revered and obeyed. Attitude, on the other hand, means “settled way of thinking or feeling about something”. Combining these two definitions, it seems that devotional attitude in the context of a Bahá’í life, would imply incorporating love, loyalty, worship and observance as the way or the mode of operation in our patterns of thinking and feelings about Bahaullah as expressed in our behaviour as we translate that which has been written into reality. The root of the Arabic word for honour (sharaf), when referring to a person, means, “to be raised up”. With this definition in mind, we understand that the honour of man is to attain a lofty station. The Báb says in the Persian Bayan (provisional translation) that “… the honour of the servant consists in affirming the singleness of his Lord, in recognizing Him, in confessing to His justice, in obedience to Him, and in obtaining His good-pleasure.”

Furthermore He says in the same Book, “There is no honour for anyone in the next life unless he has attained to the presence of his Lord and spread abroad his messages and detached himself from all but him, so far as he was able. This is an honour whereon all pride themselves.”
